MOUNTED BALLBEARING



These are one of the many types of bearings that we have in the mechanical world.As the name implies, mounted ball bearings refer to ball

bearings housed in a frame.These frames which could either be bolt-on or threaded are in turn attached to a machine frame. Examples include pillow blocks and flanged units.

There's usually a lot of friction between rotating shafts and stationary machine parts.The mounted ball bearings are therefore designed to greatly reduce friction between these parts and also create a kind of support for the shafts.They also allow for easy maintenance and replacement, as they could easily be unbolted or unscrewed from the machine parts.

The bearinas that make up the mounted ball bearina can either be chrome or stainless steel. while the housina is usually cast iron. thermoplastic. nickel-plated. or stainless steel.The material used in the making of the mounted ball bearing determines whether it can be used for liaht or heavyweight applications.


While mounted ball bearinas composed of materials such as cast iron or chrome cannot be used for heavyweiaht applications due to the brittle nature of the metals, those made up of stainless steel can withstand heavy loads and as such can be used in heavy-duty applications such as in construction and mining. Some lightweight application of this tool is in conveyor belts used in food processing industries.

Each of these features is particularly important and best for different applications.As such,a particular bearing design may be best for a particular application and not suitable for another.We will nowlook at the features of mounted ball bearings and the bestapplication for each feature.


These features can be grouped into the three components of the tool namely, the housing featurebearing featureand the locking mechanism.






Housing Features



The housing of mounted bearings can be made ofvarious materials depending on the industry


where the bearing is to beapplied.Most applications of this tool make use of castiron,stainless steel,or

thermoplastic. The right material used for the housing is essential for the bearing fulfilling the intended purpose.Other features ofthe housing included.



Grease Fittings


Lubrication of the bearings is very important for their maintenance and prolonged use.Therefore,the installation of grease fittings or zerks in the mounted bearing housing helps the tool work more efficiently and prevents bearing failure.



Solid Base



Mounted bearings bases with cavities can promote the build-up of materials under the bearings.Although these materials do not cause any harm to the housing itselfit makes cleaningdifficult and hence not suitable for food industries.Also,these contaminants can trap moisture on the cast iron housing of mounted bearings and cause them to corrode.

This feature is found in the housing of most mounted bearing these days, as it's becoming increasingly popularIt comprises a polymer saturated with oil that is fitted inside the bearing such that it does not

impede the movement of the bearing.This feature possesses various

benefits that are of great significance to the efficiency of the tool.


Some of these are protected from contaminationprovide the bearing with a much greater amount of grease for lubrication, support the seals, etc.



End Caps


These serve as a kind of protection from contamination for the bearing inserts and shafts.They also serve as a kind of safety feature in

mounted bearing applications with shafts revolving at very high speeds and also allow for easier and quicker installation and removal.

These features help to increase the efficiency and reliability of the mounted bearing and are thus very vital to

the performance and application of the bearing.Some of these features include


Wide Inner Rings


This increases the stability and

performance of the bearing by reducing the tendency of the bearing to tilt on the shaft in the case of undersized shafting.A wide inner ring also gives the bearing a

longer life span.



Anti-rotation Device



This refers to a protrusion on the outer ring of the bearing that goes into a small

space in the housing.This feature increases the life of the bearing by preventing the outer ring from spinning inside the housing while allowing the self-

alignment of the bearing.


Bearing steel



The steel used for the bearing is very important and critical to the performance and application of the mounted bearing. The most commonly used type of steel is the 52100 bearing steel due to its abilityto withstand fatigue and its durability.Lesser

steel than the 52100 bearing steel is sometimes used in some components of the bearing,especially to reduce costs. This however can hurt the lifespan of the

bearing.



Flinger Seal



This increases the level of protection available to the bearing.It is attached to the inner ring and flings away any form of contaminants before reaching the seal. This feature becomes very important in applications where the bearing is exposed to heavy contamination, such as in agriculture.An example is the triple lip seal.



Bearing Retainer



This is vital in the functioning of the bearings and is sometimes referred to as cage or separator.It serves to separate the balls or rolling elements,controls the motion, and even aids in the lubrication of the bearings.The materials used for the cages can be steelbronze,plasticsor reinforced nylons.Bearings that are exposed to high heat and require corrosion resistance can make use of different materials for the cages. Although, riveted steel cages are more appropriate for general applications.














Locking Mechanisms


This refers to how the bearing is connected to the shaft.Choosing a bearing with a very good locking

mechanism can help with some problems encountered in the use of bearings such as an  undersized or damaged shaft.We offer various styles of locking mechanisms available to suit your need. Some examples are given below.


Set Screws


This is the most basic locking system

available. This system requires a feature known as annealed set screw ports for its functionality. Annealing the ports allow them to withstand more mechanical stress and higher torque and hence prevents fracturing of the race. Some other locking mechanisms include the eccentric collars

adapter sleevesand the concentric collars which are much more adapted to high-speed applications.


Pillow Blocks


These refer to mounted bearings employed in situations where the shaft is parallel to the mounting surface and perpendicular to the mounting

screws. The construction of the pillow blocks is such that they are held in place by two bolts at the base of the bearing housing.The outer ring of the block is stationary, while the inner ring which contains the bearing rotates as needed.

These mounted bearings are used in clean environment applications and are not suitable for heavy loads.They are also used in the

transmission of power in mechanical systems and in supporting shafts and couplings.Pillow blocks are sometimes referred to as Pummel blocks and can be used with various types of bearings apart from the ball bearing, such as the cylindrical bearing and the tapered roller.

Despite the very close similarities in both Pillowblocks and Pummelblocks,they are slightly different in construction. While Pummel blocks can be used for high power and heavy-duty applications,Pillow blocks are employed in the lightweight industry.



Flange Blocks


These are employed when the shaft is perpendicular to the mounting surface.Flange blocks come in different designs, engineered to meet specific requirements.This, in turn,affects the load capacity and performance of the bearing. They can be held in place by two, three, or four bolts.

While the 4-bolt desian can take heavy loads,the 2-bolt desian is known asflangettes,and cannot be used for heavy-duty applications. These types of mounted bearings are tough and water and dirt-resistant and as such can be used in a variety of equipment that requires any kind of rotary motion.

Hanger Blocks


This comprises well-lubricated split roller bearings housedtogether usually with a castiron housing.These are mainly used for conveyor shafts and belts and are extensively used in agricultural applications and heavyweight industries. They are also used in automotive, marine, and aircraft assemblies.

The housings are usually whole(one-piece)or split(two-piece).The 2-piece bearings facilitate easier maintenance and replacement of the bearings,as the housing can easily be disassembled.There are various types and specifications of hanger blocks based on the bearing inner shaft diameter,bearing style,housing,and material used in construction.

Hanger bearings are made with various material types depending on the application of the bearing.These can be cast iron, wood, bronze

steel, plastics, ceramics, thermoplastics, and various types of polymers. Wood is usually used and best applied in hangers used in the conveyinc of moderately abrasive materials such as grains and chemicals.
